This is Haugtussa's grave.

No daffodil's grew here before and we didn't plant this one.

She loved flowers.

The kidney failure finally caught up with her. She got much worse yesterday. Tonight we had the vet who makes house calls to put animals to sleep come and help her over.

No more pills. No more needles. No more pain.

I am lost.

It occurred to me recently that I'd never had cats and mice at the same time. I suppose that's not completely unreasonable, but I've had both in spades (at different times).

But recently I've had both. We noticed signs when we moved into the house of previous mouse problems. But for six years we had no sign of them. Along the way we've picked up some cats (well, they picked us). Only one lives inside--Haugtussa, the Norwegian Forest Cat.

A badly placed bag of grass seed has spurred the invasion of some mice. Not a ton (I KNOW what a ton of mice is like) but a couple. And I have learned something about cats and mice. I knew cats were designed to catch small, fast prey--but I didn't know about the patience. She will lie all night by a place she smells a mouse or saw one. She'll regularly stake it out during the day. I guess I always sort of thought cats caught mice by accident. No. It is careful planning and dedication. I love my cats.

Our mouser.

It makes me happy when my kitten is purring just because she's laying on me.

Those of you who saw the pics of my gorgeous skogkatt, Haugtussa aka the Cutie Kitten in a previous entry might want to see what she looked like when she arrived here. She was in sad shape then.
