I've just had a thought. I'm intoxicated by the way. In the past--if one could gather a certain number of humans, or humanoids with language abilities, I'm pretty sure that if I said to them (in their language) "Life's a bitch and then you die" at least one of them would laugh. As a matter of fact, I have a feeling that that might be the true gauge of humanity. Humor. A feat that requires two tremendous leaps: To accept the negative side of life, and to laugh in the face of it. By that gauge many “humans” today fail that test.
There’s a large number of people who believe that the salvation of humanity lies in humanity following their rules.
I am going to do something exceedingly unusual for me. I’m going to make a statement. Unless those rules are borne of Reason, Justice and Love, they are moot.
The history of humanity is the powerful ruling the rest. It will continue to be so until words like Freedom, Justice, Mercy, Love, Democracy, Fair, Necessary, Right, Rights, Justice, Just, Good, Evil, Wrong, Moral, Ethical, Sin, Faith…I could go on for quite a while...have meanings that are REAL.
I’m going to go even further from my usual way. I believe there are only two real sins. Selfishness and Self-righteousness. I believe the first, of which I am guilty, is often recognized as a sin—in someone other than oneself. The second seems to me to be the theme of Jesus’ life. Christians dote on the specifics of Jesus’ chastising of sinners and their specific sins. But what is the theme of Jesus’ admonitions? Self-righteousness! All those who thought they knew the way of God and thought they could use it to their benefit were the enemies of Jesus.
Look around us today. I have difficulty imagining the disgust Jesus would feel today seeing what Christianity has become today. The rich and the self-righteousness believe themselves to be the holiest in this country. The war-mongerers and ignorers of the poor believe themselves to be the followers of Jesus.
What kind of crazy world is this? When will justice be done?
I’m not a believer. It is not in my makeup. It is a sad state.
But I do wish that reason or God would finally take hold of this planet before we destroy it and our selves. I wish that humans could rise above humanity, with or without help, and make the world that seems impossible but I can’t go on living without believing is possible. Well, maybe I am a believer.
